Low-Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound in Cardiovascular Diseases: Research Hotspots and Clinical Translation Prospects

ABSTRACT

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) represent a significant global health challenge. Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS), a non-invasive therapeutic approach, has emerged as a promising modality for promoting tissue repair, reducing inflammation, and improving microcirculation. This study employs a combination of bibliometric analysis and a systematic research review to outline the evolving landscape of LIPUS applications in cardiovascular disease. Relevant literature was comprehensively retrieved from the Web of Science and Scopus databases. Analytical insights were derived from publication trends, collaborative networks, and keyword mapping. The findings indicate that China currently leads in research output, followed by Japan and Brazil, though international collaboration remains limited. Current research on LIPUS in CVDs primarily focuses on angiogenesis mechanisms, myocardial infarction, and metabolic regulation, with evidence largely derived from animal studies. These investigations have established its anti-inflammatory, pro-angiogenic, and cardioprotective benefits in conditions such as ischemic heart disease and metabolic cardiomyopathy. Preliminary clinical studies also indicate its therapeutic potential for coronary and peripheral artery disease. Overall, the field is transitioning from foundational research toward clinical exploration. To advance translational progress, future efforts should foster cross-regional collaboration, integrate mechanistic and clinical inquiries, and prioritize larger-scale trials in understudied cardiovascular conditions to facilitate broader clinical implementation.
