ABSTRACT

Cardiovascular disease is among the leading causes of maternal morbidity and mortality in the United States. In patients with underlying cardiovascular disease, safe and effective contraception can prevent the poor outcomes that are associated with unplanned pregnancy. There are many options for contraception, and it is important to understand how certain cardiovascular diseases impact contraceptive recommendations. This review aims to summarize the options for contraception, emphasize the importance of patient-centered contraceptive counseling, and describe the risks and benefits of each method in patients with different types of cardiovascular disease.
