ABSTRACT

Syncope and presyncope symptoms occur commonly in pregnancy. Evaluation of syncope should include careful history and physical examination to determine underlying etiology. Patients with concerns for cardiogenic syncope require cardiology evaluation and multidisciplinary management. Orthostatic hypotension, vasovagal syncope and orthostatic intolerance carry favorable prognosis in pregnancy. Careful attention to volume status and avoidance of triggers can lead to successful pregnancy outcomes. Refractory cases requiring medical management should undergo individualized discussion of risk and benefits of treatment to optimize pregnancy outcomes.
