ABSTRACT

Hyperlipidaemia is a major modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease and drives increased cardiovascular-related mortality globally. Selenium compounds, notably organic selenium species, exert beneficial effects against hyperlipidaemia and thus represent promising bioactive agents for the maintenance of systemic lipid balance. Herein, EHNBS-30, an economically promising enzymatic hydrolysate derived from soybeans biofortified with 30 mg L-1 nano-selenium (predominantly enriched with SeMet and MeSeCys), was prepared, and its anti-hyperlipidaemic activities were evaluated in high-fat diet (HFD)-fed Kunming mice. The medium-dose EHNBS-30 group achieved the optimal lipid-regulating outcomes: serum TC, LDL-C and TG decreased by 9.49%, 15.13% and 48.67%, respectively, while HDL-C increased by 40.09% compared with the hyperlipidaemic model group. Additionally, EHNBS-30 significantly elevated the hepatic activities of GSH-Px, SOD and T-AOC, and reduced ALT, AST and ALP levels (p < 0.05), effectively relieving liver damage. Importantly, it also restored gut microbiota and short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) homeostasis in hyperlipidaemic mice, indicating that its lipid-regulating effect was associated with alterations in intestinal microecology. The present work provides insights into the anti-hyperlipidaemic mechanisms of EHNBS-30 and lays a theoretical foundation for the development of novel selenium-enriched lipid-regulating functional foods.
