ABSTRACT

Pregnancy and the postpartum period are times of significant hemodynamic change and can cause new cardiac disease, highlight previously unknown cardiovascular disease (CVD) or exacerbate known underlying CVD. While cardiovascular events frequently occur during pregnancy, half of maternal deaths occur in the postpartum period. Postpartum monitoring needs to be individualized based on the underlying disease process and must include inpatient and outpatient management plans. Care by a multidisciplinary team, including a mindful transition from obstetrics (OB) to primary care and/or cardiology, is necessary to optimize future pregnancy and long-term health.
