ABSTRACT
Venous thromboembolism (VTE) remains a leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality. Pregnancy is a hypercoagulable state that increases VTE risk due to physiologic and anatomic changes of pregnancy. A clear understanding of risk assessment, diagnosis, and management of VTE in pregnancy is essential to optimize maternal outcomes. Diagnosis of VTE in pregnancy is often challenging, as symptoms may overlap with physiologic pregnancy-related changes. Accurate diagnosis requires high clinical suspicion and an understanding of various imaging modalities in pregnancy. Anticoagulation is the primary form of management of VTE in pregnancy and requires close care coordination and multidisciplinary management.
