ABSTRACT

Epigenetics, defined as the regulatory mechanisms that modulate genetic information flow without altering the DNA sequence, plays a crucial role in development, aging, and disease. This review explores the key epigenetic mechanisms-DNA methylation, histone modifications, chromatin remodeling, and non-coding RNAs-and their contributions to cellular differentiation, tissue homeostasis, and disease progression. We focus on their roles in gametogenesis, early development, stem cell reprogramming, and aging, highlighting how epigenetic alterations influence health and disease. The review also discusses emerging therapeutic approaches targeting epigenetic modifications, with potential applications in disease treatment and longevity. Finally, we examine the future of epigenetic research, emphasizing the need for precision therapies and the integration of epigenetic tools in clinical practice.
