ABSTRACT

Both HIV diagnosis and antiretroviral therapy (55.1%) increase the risk of developing lipid profile abnormalities. This has led the European Society of Cardiology, in its 2025 update on the management of dyslipidemias, to incorporate statin therapy in patients older than 40 years with an HIV diagnosis as primary prevention for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. These updates not only recommend strict control of the lipid profile in this population group, but also pharmacological therapy for the prevention of future cardiovascular events.
